Ravenna works as a spy for King James. When she is assigned to act as an educator for the son of one of the lairds of Scotland, it's so she can gather information on Scotland's plans to revolt against England. She doesn't intend to fall in love with the laird Ruari—but, of course, she does. Though the narrative could be more thorough in explaining plot points, the strong female character and love born out of empathy makes My Highland Spy a satisfying read.
